How do animals recognize their own reflections?

The ability of animals to recognize their own reflections, known as self-recognition, is a cognitive skill found in only a few species. Some animals, like great apes, dolphins, and elephants, have demonstrated this capacity. Scientists use the “mirror test” to assess self-recognition, observing whether an animal reacts to its reflection as if it recognizes itself. This ability is linked to complex brain functions and a sense of self-awareness, traits that are not universal in the animal kingdom.
